At our town’s Kelly Park, there exists a diverse array of playground equipment for children; however, only one piece of inclusive equipment, an accessible swing set, is currently available. Presently, the accessibility swing has two supporting metal posts of the swing set securely embedded in concrete, and the surrounding 260 square feet surface is covered with small pea gravel, contained within a concrete border - see photos below. Investing in a reliable shock absorption mat under this accessible playground swing will provide a cushioned surface. We have identified 4 school-age physically challenged children in our town and are aware that there are some children with neurodivergent conditions that can benefit from this project.
Our Association has successfully approached both our Town and ActiveNL (GovNL/Dept. Tourism, Culture, Arts & Recreation) to partner with us to equally share the costs of this project. All three partners have each contributed $9,583.00. The Town will contribute an additional $4,000 in-kind work to remove the concrete border and pea gravel, prepare proper bedding materials, and grade the surface accordingly. A local company, Coastline Specialties Ltd., has been contracted to resurface the area with poured rubber surfacing covering approximately 450 square feet, in compliance with CSA requirements. The work should be completed before the end of August 2025.
We thank both the Town and ActiveNL for partnering with us in this project. Our contribution was fundraised at the 2024 September Biscuits & Bingo event and our sale of Cold Plates later in the fall. Many thanks to our many volunteers and resident supporters.
