Kelly Park in our town offers a variety of playground equipment for children; however, only one inclusive feature—a swing set—is available. Originally, the swing was supported by two metal posts embedded in concrete, with its surrounding 260 square feet covered by small pea gravel contained within a concrete border (see photos below). Recognizing the need for improved accessibility, our Association initiated the installation of a dependable shock absorption mat beneath this inclusive swing to provide a cushioned surface for users.
Our Association collaborated with the Town and ActiveNL (GovNL/Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts & Recreation) to jointly fund this project. The Town provided additional in-kind services, including the removal of the concrete border and pea gravel, preparation of appropriate bedding materials, and grading of the surface according to standards required for mat installation. In September, Coastline Specialties Ltd. installed approximately 450 square feet of rubber surface, ensuring compliance with CSA requirements. Subsequently, we partnered with the Town to co-fund the purchase of a new swing seat equipped with a three-point harness. Total project cost was $32,505.00.
We extend our gratitude to both the Town and ActiveNL for their partnership on this initiative. Our funding was raised through the September 2024 Biscuits & Bingo event and Cold Plates sales later in the fall. We also wish to thank our dedicated volunteers and resident supporters for their invaluable assistance.
A special acknowledgment goes to Joedy Wall, MHA Cape St. Francis, his support.
