The Veterans Memorial was built in 2014 at Ship’s Point, Outer Cove with funding from Veterans Affairs Canada and the Town. In March of 2017, the memorial was destroyed by hurricane-force winds. In 2018, our Association partnered with the Town in seeking funding from Veterans Affairs Canada to rebuild the monument as part of Phase I restoration. Our Veterans Memorial Park honors the many men and women who have served in uniform for Britain and Canada during the military and peacekeeping conflicts of our time. The only text on the three vertical granite pillars of the cenotaph is Army, Navy, and Air Force, and the names of the three communities are etched into the base. Beginning in 2020, our Association started work on Phase II of the restoration with the undertaking of a feasibility study to examine the expansion of the memorial by adding two engraved granite tablets. These tablets, both slanted on a granite base, will be engraved with the names of all residents who have served and passed, and the names of the military and peace conflicts they served in, beginning with WW I. Working with our Town’s Heritage Committee and Museum staff we have estimated the names to be around 100, including some with no known graves. Again in 2022, we will work with the Town's Heritage Committee and Museum to ensure we have the names of everyone who served listed. As other veterans pass, their names will be added to the tablets. This addition of engraved granite tablets to the park cenotaph will have a profound impact on families whose loved ones served in world-changing events some of which altered a way of life for those at home.
In September of 2021, our Veterans Memorial Committee began fundraising for our project’s contribution, which will continue in 2022. This proposed installation of engraved tablets with the names of families still living within our town offers them a link to the past while providing new residents with insight into our history. It will enhance the physical setting of the cenotaph and create a sense of “place” at our Town’s Veterans Memorial Park for generations to come. Your donation will ensure that our veterans are recognized. For today, for tomorrow and for generations to come. You can help by Sending Your Gift Today!
