SFOA School Grade 6 Legacy Project For July 1st Memorial Day
On Friday, April 21st, KP community garden volunteers Rita Kennedy and Karen Youden Walsh along with LBDA board member John Kennedy visited the grade 6 students at St. Francis of Assisi school to help them begin their legacy project for the community before their graduation in June. This year the students will be growing forget-me-nots in their classroom and transplanting them at the Veterans Memorial in Outer Cove before the annual Memorial Day ceremony on July 1st. In addition to learning how to plant and grow flower seeds in honour of Earth Day on April 22nd, the students also learned the special meaning of the forget-me-not flower to the people of our province. Before joining Canada in 1949, the forget-me-not flower was the emblem of remembrance symbolizing the courage and sacrifice of hundreds of young soldiers in the Newfoundland Regiment who died at Beaumont Hamel on July 1st, 1916.
Special thanks to Grade 6 teacher Penny Dyer for her support and efforts. #SFOASchool #LBMCOCDA
