Due to terrible weather conditions on November 11, our Town's Remembrance Day Ceremony was held in the St. Francis of Assisi school gymnasium. This well-attended event was organized by town staff and emceed by our Veterans Memorial Committee (VMC) member Bradley Power. After the ceremony, many participants visited the O’Brien family memorial grotto located next door on the Church grounds.
All but one of the six O'Brien brothers who answered the call in WWII served at sea. Tragically, four died in service between December 1940 and October 1942: Maurice and David in the Royal Navy, Michael in the Royal Merchant Navy , and James in the American Merchant Marines.
The grotto was commissioned by Margaret (née Hickey) O’Brien, known as Newfoundland's Most Bereaved Mother, and built in the mid-1950s by Richard Mahon (senior and junior), formerly of Logy Bay.
In February 2020, our Association turned its attention to restoring the aging memorial to honour the O'Brien family who epitomize the Canadian values of freedom, human rights, peace by their hard work and service. Funds raised within the community by the VMC were used for this project. In 2022, our association and the VMC will add a storyboard to the left of the grotto telling this family's tragic story - a partial draft of the storyboard is seen in the header photo above. After more information is gathered the storyboard will be erected before July 1st. You can help us finish this project by Sending Your Gift today.
